Ooh, this is a bit exciting. The Australian government might be about to actually make a significant legal decision regarding the Church of Scientology.
Specifically, there’s been a lengthy investigation into the way the Church may have used their status as a tax-exempt religion to avoid having to comply with labour laws, and keep many members in what amounts to little more than indentured servitude.
I can’t tell how much this is just the Village Voice acting over-excited and getting its hopes up, but this:
Scientology could be forced to pay millions of dollars in back pay, as well as taxes on that pay, and raise every worker to minimum wage into the future. Former chief Scientology spokesman, Mike Rinder, who himself is from Australia, says such a decision will immediately bankrupt the church there.
…sounds pretty awesome. Fingers crossed something comes of this soon.
