I have something to say which apparently isn’t getting through to people: atheists don’t believe in any god. Any god. Including yours. Impersonal, anthropomorphic, human-shaped, ethereal – some might be more plausible than others, but we’re not buying it when it comes to a single one.
So, religious people: when you say things – and I don’t have a direct link to where this has been said, but people do say it – like “I don’t believe in the God that Christopher Hitchens doesn’t believe in either”, you sound like an idiot. As if a man like Hitch hasn’t read the goddamn Bible, and couldn’t describe the character of your god as revealed through scripture with a thousand times the elegance and insight that you could.
And as if atheists have just decided that a man with a big white beard couldn’t possibly be up there sitting on a cloud, because mere water vapour could never carry his weight, and anyway the lightning bolts would scald his hand and the acoustics for all those harps would be terrible, and that’s why there’s no God. Come on. There are any number of gods that you’ve decided don’t exist. And we’ve reached the same conclusion about all of them. And about one more.
Just needed to get that out there.
